I live in a multi-cultural country....its a fact, there are more people of differing ethnicity's than I have even seen before in my life....living in one place !
Maybe I see the world in a different way to other's and I am not sure how this occurred or when I discovered this ability, but I observe people around me, the way they glance at each other, the hint of curiosity and sometimes fear that others are taking over.....I am curious as to who these others are supposed to be ?
Let me just explain something I feel is true of this world !
We ALL want a better life, a better place to live and an abundance of love....it may surprise you to know these these so-called other people want exactly the same.
I wandered the streets of our capital city yesterday.....it was noisy, crowded and full of every kind of person...and I loved it !
Yet it still astounds me when I see the occasional person glance in a particular way at a young lady in a headscarf, I am not sure if they see beyond what she wears....rarely do they look into her deep, beautiful mahogany eyes and see the journey she has taken to get here, let alone acknowledging her fear of fitting into a society that may reject her !
There are numerous examples of our ignorance towards others I could describe, it can be a curse to see the world as it is sometimes....will we ever learn to get along ?
I tend to be a curious creature and have little or no fear in asking a person where they are from, their journey fascinates me, stories of their homeland and what it took to get here...in some cases the price paid has been more than any of us would ever accept....the loss of family, learning a new language.....just so you can fit in, belong, thrive.....isn't that what we ALL want ?
For me honesty is the best policy......if you're an arse and treat people poorly, then I will tell you....don't assume its because of the colour of your skin or the accent you speak......its because you're an arse.....that's honesty !
If however you engage with the world, speak openly and honestly, face down those fears that others hold up like an umbrella protecting them from the rain.....you're world will be a different place....a better place.
For me its easier to hide my differences...they are on the inside.....as I say, honesty is the best policy....... being gay is still a crime in certain countries and yes there have been times I have caught the occasional glance from others, those judgement's thrown in my direction !
The whole is greater than the sums of its parts...and old saying that means more now than ever....so take a moment today....not for some politically correct notion of how we should behave, but for humanity, embrace this diverse world we live in and celebrate the differences in people....acknowledge their journey, the sacrifices made to get to where they are right now !
