As tourists, we drift in unseen; unnoticed.
The locals view us as a necessary evil, like it or not we fund their local economy.
Rarely do we impact on the daily lives of these locals, life goes on much as it has done for a thousand years before.
We gasp and gawk, like a brood of hens, clucking and pecking...wide eyed with wonder.
As we wander we dream of living here...or there, we make imaginary plans know deep in our hearts it can never be, there are too many obstacles in the way, fear being the main one !
From Rome to Paris and many other places in between we amble, cameras at the ready...technology always taking precedence so that we may, or may not look back when we get home and yearn for these days again.
We have become ghosts, we linger in these places for a brief moment, take our photos, our videos and move on leaving nothing behind.
I say ghosts because there are many times as a tourist I sit to the side and watch; people watch.
Observing the life around me, listening to the various languages being spoken, the hustle and bustle of food markets...all the while being unseen by those that pass me by.
I'm okay with this way of being, I am not local and will never belong in this place...I am just passing through and won't interrupt your day in order to stroke my ego and attempt to validate my presence.
Travel certainly does broaden the mind but it is up to the individual to take from it what is required, needed.
It is not enough to say I have been there, got the tee shirt; there is so much more a person can learn.
There are some in this world quite content to stay home, go about their daily lives with little or no expectation of looking beyond their place of home, commerce and general being.
It seems enough for them to do the same thing day after day and when all is said and done, this is a choice on their part.
So as I prepare for another journey, I also anticipate being ghost-like once again...drifting in, drifting out, recording what I see as best I can while feeding my soul and dreaming of life somewhere else !
